There’s a theory among the self-help gurus that it takes 30 days to break a bad habit or make a new good habit. So with just over a month before the start of the New Year, 2014, now – and I mean right now, this minute – is the time to break the habit of making excuses and start on a pathway to exceptional living.
But where to begin? With me, it’s almost always with some sort of check list. That must come from my background in aviation. When I have a doubt as to how I’m about to do something, I start by grabbing a note pad and asking myself some of the same questions I ask when I’m counseling a “Natural Health” client or customer.
- Where/what would you like to go/do?
- Have you tried this before?
- What have you tried?
- What would you have done different?
- What would you like to have as a result in 180 days?
- What would that feel like for you?
- What is in the way?
- Is that an insurmountable block or an excuse?
- What small step could you begin with today?
With those questions answered, usually in black and white (or yellow if I used a legal pad) I can get a good crisp visualization of where I’m at now, the road behind me, and the road ahead. Now comes the most important question of all. Who will support me 100%?
I am a big advocate of having an accountability partner. I strongly urge you to read the article, mostly quoted from a series on the subject by Dr. Charles Stanley, that I posted in another one of my blogs about selecting the right accountability partner.
How important is it? Well, without an accountability partner, your chances of success are probably less than 50%. Yet with the right partner to encourage your success and hold you accountable to your stated goals, you’ll be as close to a 100% guarantee as possible.
So no matter what your health and wellness goals, or whatever habit it is that you want to make or break, make 2014 the Year of No Excuses!
